The following steps outline the approval process for the Cherokee Sheriff's Office Internship Program:

• Applicants must meet all mandatory requirements and have no disqualifying factors.
• Interested students must inquire about the internship program, complete the CSO Internship Information Form, and return it to the Internship Coordinator.
• The Internship Coordinator will contact the college internship coordinator and/or course professor to verify that the student is eligible to participate in an internship.
• If eligibility is confirmed, the Internship Coordinator will send the applicant a Criminal History Consent Form to complete and return.
• A criminal history check will be conducted. If no criminal history is found, the applicant will be provided with an Internship Program Background Packet.
• Once the background packet is completed and returned, the Internship Coordinator will review the packet and ensure all required documentation has been submitted.
• If there are no disqualifiers or additional clarification needed, the applicant will be scheduled for a drug screening, at no cost to the applicant.
• If the drug screening results are negative, the applicant will then be scheduled for a polygraph examination, also at no cost to the applicant.
• If the applicant successfully passes the polygraph examination, the Internship Coordinator will conduct a final review of all paperwork and testing results.
• The Internship Coordinator will then make a recommendation to their Division Commander regarding whether the applicant should be approved or denied for participation in the internship program.
• The applicant will be notified whether they have been approved or denied to participate in the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Internship Program.
• If approved, the intern will meet with the Internship Coordinator for a formal meeting to discuss the internship program, expectations, and scheduling.

Removal from the Process or Program

Applicants and interns may be removed from the approval process or the Internship Program at any time. Examples of reasons for removal include, but are not limited to:

• Displaying unprofessional conduct
• Failing any required testing
• Failing to follow the dress code
• Failing to maintain communication with or respond to the Internship Coordinator in a timely manner
• Providing false or untruthful information
• Missing scheduled appointments or assignments
• Any other circumstance deemed appropriate for removal by the Internship Coordinator

Mandatory Requirements

• Be 18 years of age or older.
• Be a born or naturalized citizen of the United States or be legally qualified to work or attend college in the United States.
• Be currently enrolled in a college or university criminal justice program or related course of study.
• Be eligible and approved by the college or university to participate in an internship.
• Be in good academic standing with their institution.
• Possess a state-issued GED or high school diploma recognized by Cognia or an equivalent accrediting agency.
• Possess a valid driver's license or state-issued identification card.
• Successfully complete a criminal history check, background check, drug screening, and polygraph examination.

Disqualifiers

Applicants may be disqualified from participation in the Internship Program for any of the following reasons:

• A Dishonorable Discharge from any branch of military service.
• A history of arrests or convictions demonstrating irresponsible behavior or disregard for local, state, or federal law.
• A history of multiple traffic violations that endangered the lives or safety of others.
• Any stretching or “gauging” of the earlobe or other visible body part.
• Conviction of, or plea of guilty or Nolo Contendere to DUI within the past 60 months.
• Conviction of, or plea of guilty or Nolo Contendere to, a felony offense or act of Family Violence.
• Illegal sale or distribution of any narcotic for profit or personal gain.
• Illegal use of any scheduled drug within the past 60 months.
• Manufacturing, cultivating, or growing any illegal narcotic.
• Marijuana use within the past 12 months.
• Permanent body piercings on the ears, face, hands, neck, or tongue that cannot be removed.
• Visible tattoos, intentional scarring, branding, or mutilation on the ears, face, head, or neck area. (If located on the hand, it must be covered by one agency-approved ring on each hand.)
